Neat Historical Map of the Day: The Proposed “Second System” of the New York Subway in 1939.
Map of the proposed “Second System” of the New York Subway in 1939.
The City of New York submitted two plans to expand the existing subway system, first in 1929 through the construction of their own subway (which later became the IND, today’s 6th Avenue B/D/F/V (for now) and 8th Avenue lines (A/C/E)), and again in 1939 when plans to unify all three independently owned subway companies under city management were being rectified. The so-called “Second System” planned for 100 miles of expansion, including more than 50 miles in Queens alone, and a rail tunnel to link Staten Island and Brooklyn via Subway.
Most of the Second System was never built, the Second Avenue Subway made one of it’s first appearances in this plan.
Urban explorers can note some of the vestiges of their system that were built and now hidden, and some are even hidden in plain sight (if you know what to look for).
