    Firstborn Is No. 8 on Ad Age's Agency A-List

    Digital ‘Production Company’ Earns the Title of Agency by Beating the Big Guys to Win Work From PepsiCo, Wrigley

    NEW YORK (AdAge.com) — Last year marked a coming of age for production shops, and no small, nimble independent threatened interactive agencies’ hold on big brand digital business more than Firstborn in 2009.

    With three direct-to-client wins from PepsiCo, Wrigley and Aflac, founder-CEO Michael Ferdman’s New York-based digital “production company” shrugged off that distinction to unequivocally assume the “agency” mantle.

    And it couldn’t have come at a better time. As many small digital shops with production-oriented bases struggled, Firstborn managed a projected 13% bump in year-end revenue to $8.5 million for 2009, said Mr. Ferdman. The agency’s ability to thrive during the recession relied on a measured evolution of its model, balancing new direct-client relationships with its established project business for agencies such as Team Detroit and Droga5.

    OMMA Agency of the Year - Best Web Design and Development: Firstborn Working both with agency partners such as Droga5, Wunderman and Ogilvy as well as, increasingly, as digital aor (including recent wins Aflac and SoBe), Firstborn has raised the bar for advanced design and development that feels somehow simple and intuitive to users. After all, all the fancy 3-D animation in the world doesn’t amount to much if it feels forced or unnatural. A dramatic site Firstborn created for Ford Mustang with Wunderman Detroit harnessed the power of social media to get enthusiasts (is there any other kind of Mustang owner?) sharing designs created with a customizer that went far beyond the sea of them currently online in autoland. Its full-video site for the launch of the Puma L.I.F.T. sneaker created an engaging and humorous user experience that somehow did not feel like a Web site. And using the 3-D assets created for the 13-year-old interactive shop’s first-ever broadcast spot, Firstborn created an immersive 3-D game with BBDO for M&M’s. MORE I’m starting a new life chapter with Firstborn next week and I couldn’t be happier and more proud. Congratulations everyone!!
