The second of the NYPD’s fleet of Chevrolet Volts I’ve seen, but first I’ve been able to capture on “film.” Spotted at W. 14th and 7th Ave on my way back from getting my hairs did at Freemans.

For those keeping track, that’s 30 bhp and 46 lb-ft more than Ford’s 2011 Shelby GT500. In addition, the ZL1 comes equipped with transmission, differential, and brake-cooling systems already in place; a beefed up Tremec TR6060 six-speed transmission to handle the extra power; and brand-new Michelin Pilot Sport Cup Zero Pressure (ZP) tires developed specifically for the ZL1 and Corvette. Not bad, not bad at all.

Biggest news? The new Michelin Pilot Sport Cup tires have superglue grip and improve upon the Z06 driving characteristics by a large margin. Is this the best handling Corvette in history? Could be.

Holy Leaping Camaro Wreck of the Day:
Grand Am Camaro’s brakes lockup at high speed, violently nudges Mazda RX-8 out of the way, and then proceeds to leap the tire wall (and the fence!) at Road America — as seen by one helluva lucky photographer.
